You know why?
A few months ago, after Roy Hodgson stepped dowm, I placed a speculative bet on Southgate becoming 'Next England Manager'. I can't recall how much my stake was, but it was a considerable amount of money because I liked his chances.
Shortly after placing the bet, Southgate became the short-priced favourite. Then - a couple of days afterwards - Southgate said he had no interest in taking the job.
Sam Allardyce ended up at the helm and this killed my bet.
As we all now know, Allardyce's reign ended a little over a day ago. Southgate has now been announced as the caretaker manager for the next four games.
It's a funny old game..
