The First Andre Memorial

When Hulk Hogan was on WWE Monday Night Raw a few weeks ago and announced there would be an Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal taking place at WrestleMania XXX, I chuckled to myself.

You see, back in 1993 - the year that Andre the Giant passed away - my friends and I memorialised the wrestler with our very own tribute.

The Andre the Giant Memorial Tournament.

Back in the day, a gang of us would descend upon a friend's house after school and fight each other in the living room. It was just kids being kids.

I was reminded of our Andre tournament late last year when I was looking through old school work. As I was going through the pad, a page with a tournament bracket fell out.

I burst out laughing. The 4-5-6 Kid (me), The Melrose Mauler and The Harrismith Horror had escaped my memory for over twenty years.

Funnily enough, I had drawn my own Andre the Giant trophy on the page along with the logo:

Well, I think that's what the blob of ink is supposed to be!

Our tournament was in a round robin format and - judging by the way I set it out - I think FIFA would have been proud of the complexity of the draw.

At least WWE have made things easier.

Just dump everyone in the ring at once and let it last until there's one man left. Problem solved.
