'Vintage Manning'

What a fine Monday morning it was. I woke up, turned on the TV and watched the Pittsburgh Steelers versus Denver Broncos game that I had set to record just before heading to bed.

It was Peyton Manning's regular season return to the NFL after spending 2011 on the sidelines.

And - to steal a quote from the NFL website - 'Vintage Manning' was back.

Yes, I know this is the Manning fanboy in me typing this blog today. I don't care.

A lot, and I mean a lot, of people were counting out Denver's chances of winning against the Steelers. Handicappers whose opinion I respect were going for Pittsburgh plus the points.

Not me.

I layed my money firmly on the Broncos.

There was no way Manning was going to falter on his return. Furthermore, Denver were going to be an improved team with Manning at the helm.

And here's why.

Manning's last season with the Indianapolis Colts in 2010 saw the team pick up a 10-6 win-loss record. In his 2011 absence, the Colts went 2-14.

In 2011, Denver were an 8-8 team so it's safe to say they were a mediocre team. Add Manning and they are going to be well above average.

To conclude - it was wrong to bet against Manning.

Not just yet.
