With the Cheltenham Festival taking up room on this blog last week, and then having to do a catch up job this week, I didn't get to write about Newcastle United winning the Carabao Cup over the weekend.
The Magpies beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. It was the first time Newcastle United lifted a domestic trophy in seventy years.
As I've written here over the years, Newcastle was my team from my childhood and a bit. I moved on from them many years ago after they ended up in the same league as my local team - Cardiff City. I chose home.
I was happy to see Newcastle United win a cup, though. Especially after the close calls they've endured. I'll always remember the loss to Luton in the FA Cup in 1994. It was the first time a result broke my heart because the winners of that replay were set to play Cardiff in the following round. I had bought tickets for the match anticipating Newcastle as Cardiff's opponents.
And then there are those back-to-back FA Cup Final losses. So, without a doubt - it was about time Newcastle won some important silverware.
