I recently tried a couple of new Pepsi flavours.
It appears as though the soft drinks brand is on a cream theme over here in the UK because they've introduced 'Cream Soda' and 'Strawberries 'N Cream' flavoured cola.
I have a a HATE/HATE relationship with American cream soda dating back to the early 90s.
I had a bottle of it one school night. Then, shortly after finishing it, I became ill. I'm close to certain the illness wasn't caused by the drink itself, but every time I smell cream soda, it takes me back to the day I christened porcelain with cream soda vomit.
American cream soda has not touched my lips since. The closest thing that has is Vanilla Coke. So, for that reason alone, I thought it was okay to sample a can of the cream soda flavoured Pepsi Cola.
Upon tasting an initial sip, I wasn't taken back to my childhood. Instead, I found myself thinking 'this tastes like Vanilla Coke' - the result I expected going in.
But then came a burp.
At that point, 1991 flashed back. I had the sickly American cream soda aftertaste. To counter, I took some more sips and it was at that point I noticed the drink no longer reminded me of Vanilla Coke. It felt like I was drinking American cream soda.
On. Its. Own!
So - as you've probably guessed -I did not enjoy the experience.
There was one more flavour to try, however.
I caught a strong whiff of strawberry when I popped open the can of 'Strawberries 'N Cream'. The strength was powerful when I took an initial sip as well. It was very, very sweet. Which is surprising considering both drinks have zero sugar (even though they're peculiarly not branded in the Pepsi Max range).
Strawberries 'N Cream flavour was not as gassy as the first flavour I tasted. I reached that conclusion because it didn't cause me to belch!
Of the two, the strawberry-based flavour wins. But, to be frank, it was obviously the heavy favourite going into this head-to-head.
It''s safe to conclude I would never go out of my way to try Cream Soda Pepsi again. As for Strawberries 'N Cream - well, it may have won today, but it - for sure - doesn't match up with other drinks out there.
