Why is an American celebrity taking part in the Olympic torch relay that is taking place across Great Britain?

A majority of the eight thousand people who will take part in this relay were nominated because they have done outstanding work within their community.
Will.i.am's current contribution to this country is part of a judging panel on a television show that is tanking in the ratings.Him carrying the torch for a mile in Taunton is a kick in the teeth to those people who didn't make the final eight thousand.
There was no need for him to have any involvement.
