A Hammering?

I was listening to the radio this morning and they were talking about the Aston Villa versus Blackburn Rovers game that ended up being 6-4.

The word used to describe Villa's victory was 'hammering'.

How so?

To me - a hammering would be a 4-0, 5-0 or 6-0 win.

Hell, I'd even go as low as 3-0.

No way can you call a victory a 'hammering' when the team that has scored six times let in four. It's only a 2-0 win if we're balancing things up.
