Favre And Away

On Saturday, I shamed Robbie Fowler for the way he went about making his exit from Cardiff City. Then - later that day - I read about the situation with Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers and noticed I was more on the players side in that dispute.

Favre was one of the greatest football players. I used the term 'was' because, earlier this year, he retired from the sport.

He had served as the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers since 1992 and for the last few years there was a lot of talk about his retirement. Each year there would be rumblings of an announcement but then he would return for pre-season training camp.

2007/8 was one of his best seasons he had in recent times so it came as a shock when he announced on March 4th that he was retiring from the game.

But, then along came a different kind of rumbling.

A number of weeks ago, rumours started circulating that Favre was getting the itch to play again and then on Friday it was revealed that he did want to play again.

The Packers don't seem to want him, though. They made plans for the upcoming season without him on the team sheet. As far as they were concerned - he was retired.

So, Favre asked for his release. The Packers refused.

I can understand both parties on this matter but I am more in favour of the player.

Favre should have kept to his word or - better yet - thought about what he was doing before retiring. But, while saying that, you can't deny someone from doing the thing they are good at if they have changed their mind.

The Packers have moved on and shouldn't have to accommodate him. But, they shouldn't hold him to his contract.

Either play the guy or let him go and ply his trade elsewhere. It's not hard really, is it?

Here is a video I created on Saturday. I think you'll find it funny: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GENmlBtUakk
