Last week the American CNN channel aired a documentary on the WWE entitled 'Death Grip'. The subject matter centred on the Benoit tragedy as well as the company's steroid scandal.
What good insight this documentary brought to this piece will forever be marred by an error in judgement that occured in their editing suite.
There was a segment where the voice-over claims that John Cena denies using steroids and then aired him saying "This is a crazy question to have to answer. My answer to that question, have you ever used steroids, is the only thing I can. I can't tell you that I haven't, but you'll never be able to prove that I have."
This one quote - when I first heard it - surprised me. I couldn't believe how he would be foolish enough to admit to something like that considering he is the top star in the WWE.
A day later the WWE fought back. And rightfully so.
Footage aired on WWE.com showing the entire interview CNN held with Cena and when asked out bluntly whether he had used steroids the answer given was "Absolutely not!"
The part where Cena made the misused quote was at a stage where he was referring to how some people will doubt him if he were to say he didn't but they wouldn't be able to find proof that he was a user.
Taking this quote out of context put a shadow on what was a good piece. Shame on CNN.
The documentary can be found split into six segments on Youtube. Just do a search for 'Death Grip CNN' and I am sure you will find it.
