I endured a weekend of bad beats thanks to Ladbrokes Poker.
I decided to have a go at the Ladbrokes' Ladders shoot-out so paid the $3 entry at level one and played a tight game ensuring I didn't fall into the trap of overplaying hands where they will get called.
The fact that these buy-ins are small means there a lot of have-a- go heroes out there who wil play anything. When you have people like that at your table the best form of offence is defence.
So, there I was, sitting down at the computer and a pair of kings are dealt to me, My raise was re-raised by one of my last three opponents in the game (the top 3 won a place in level two).
I went all-in and he called.
He turned over a pair of tens and for a split second I smirked knowing I was heading to victory in the hand.
But.
A.
Horrible.
Thought.
Passed.
Over.
Me.
As if in slow motion I imagined another ten coming out on the board. My ironic wish was granted when my rival made his trips and I was out of the game.
It wasn't the first time Ladbrokes software has screwed me. I typed in the room 'typical bullshit' and closed down the program.
I'm not taking anything away from the way that player played his hand. I would have done the same thing.
I should have been more gracious in defeat and congratulated the player but there is a Machiavellian strategy to my hot-headedness that could work in my favour in the future.
