I woke up on Tuesday morning to find the latest issue of Poker Player magazine in the mail. I leafed through the pages and was intrigued at the article called 'Rebuy Rumble!' as it was about playing in rebuy tournaments at the local casino.
As this arrived the morning following my debut at the casino poker tables it enabled me to look at things in retrospect.
There was a table beside the said article that highlighted the kind of players found at the live poker tourneys and they were spot on with their descriptions as my table probably had all these individuals.
There was an 'old timer' to my right and the 'local rounder' to my left. It says that the 'local rounder' knows everyone well and to watch and learn from them. The gentleman I was playing with was helping me out as he was telling me where to sit before the game started (you need to sit in the alloted seat before the game starts) and was always helping me out. He more or less took me under his wing even though I didn't speak much to him as I was trying to play the quiet give no tells away game.
There was also a 'local loudmouth' at the table. This was the person sitting across from me who thought I was bluffing when I went all in with Big Slick and he called just to see what I had. He was okay though - he didn't seem to be a loudmouth in a bad way. It was just his way of playing.
Then there is the other kind of player which I must have fallen under and that is the 'first timer.' The magazine got it wrong, though. They said this person would be the sober and I made sure I had two beers before I sat down to play at the table. I was drinking a pint of water afterwards so to the others I must have been looking like a right fish and that is why they raised my hands a few times to scare me away from the pot.
I'm going to re-read this article and hope it enables me to make some progress the next time I go down there.
I cannot wait until I hear the 'shuffle up and deal!' shout again.
