I haven't got any time for cricket. And that's on me. However, when I found out - this afternoon - that Dickie Bird had passed away, it brought back some childhood memories.
It started when my grandmother and I were sat in the living room. I was very young at the time. The cricket must have been on because someone mentioned 'Dickie Bird'.
Upon hearing the name, I assumed Bird was a cartoon character (or something!) so I asked my nan if I could see him. She found it funny and, for the few years she was alive after that - whenever he'd be on TV - she'd point 'there's Dickie Bird' to me.
And that's it. A random memory of my nan thanks to the name of a famous umpire.
I see he was ninety-two years old. Good innings.
