Yesterday was the thirty-third anniversary of Ron Simmons defeating Big Van Vader to become WCW World Champion.
It's regarded as a historical day in professional wrestling because Simmons is recognised as the first African-American to become a world champion.
For me, it has a personal touch because all that played out on my mother's fiftieth birthday. Not that I watched the event live. We didn't get live WCW over here in the UK. I found out about the title win a few weeks later when it was relayed on an episode of WCW WorldWide on ITV.
Earlier this year, I came across an action figure of Ron Simmons representing that moment in wrestling. I had to buy it.. so I did.
As you can see, the figure comes with a WCW World Championship on Simmons' shoulder. He's also wearing the same colour tights from when he won the strap.
It's a cool item to have in my collection for the two reasons I mentioned.
