Today's News Brings Back A Memory Or Two

The first news of today which struck a chord with me, if you pardon the pun, was learning that The Roots' longtime bassist - Leonard 'Hub' Hubbard - has passed away following a long fight with cancer.

I'm not going to sit at this keyboard and claim that I was a huge fan of The Roots. However, their music does feature in the soundtrack of my life.

The first time I ever heard music from The Roots was in late-1994. I would record episodes of Yo! MTV Raps on Saturday nights here in Europe. I would then edit out all of the commercials and have a tape filled with rap music videos.

One of the first videos on my VHS cassette is Distortion To Static.

I continued to fill the tape up over the years. Another video, which reminds me of one of the last days at college, is What They Do.

Listening to the song drags me back to the night before I am about to leave my favourite time in all of education. I was very sad knowing I was going to say farewell to some good people for the last time.

I often remind myself of that entire twenty-four hours whenever I hear that song play.

...I''m listening to it now as I'm about to hit 'Publish' on this post.
