Dame Vera Lynn

Dame Vera Lynn passed away yesterday at the age of 103.

Lynn will be forever remembered as 'The Forces' Sweetheart' for her musical performances to troops on the front line during the Second World War.

Songs like We'll Meet Again and The White Cliff of Dover raised morale and became synonymous with Britain keeping its spirit during those tough times.

To highlight just how much a part of British culture We'll Meet Again has become, the Queen took a line from it when she addressed the country during the early stages of the Coronavirus pandemic.

I was obviously not alive during World War II, but my personal memory of Dame Vera Lynn will be the nation's VE Day celebrations twenty-five years ago. The two songs I mentioned were played a lot on the radio in the days leading up to it.
