'Macho Man' Randy Savage

I was shocked to hear of the passing of 'Macho Man' Randy Savage yesterday.

The former professional wrestler apparently suffered a heart attack whilst driving his car causing him to crash into a tree.

As I sit here and think of Randy Savage, I get very nostalgic indeed. After all, he was the WWF champion when I first started watching American wrestling back in 1989.

He had some incredible matches throughout his career.

Ones that stand out as I type this are his WrestleMania III bout against Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat which many count as one of the greatest Mania matches of all time. Another one that I remember fondly is his Wembley Stadium battle against The Ultimate Warrior at SummerSlam 1992. I was so hooked into that match.

My own personal memory of Savage was from when I met him in December '93.

He was wrestling in Cardiff on a WWF tour and I was waiting outside the hotel when the wrestlers arrived in their coaches. I spent the day getting my wrestling magazine signed as well as having my photograph taken with them.

I ended up walking down the road with a group of the wrestlers and Savage was one of them. As we were going along, a woman jumped out of her car and stopped him and I.

'Are you 'Macho Man' Randy Savage?' She asked.

The Macho Man, without stopping to think his next move answered.

'No.'

He looked at me with a wink and a smile and then pointed to the hotel. He turned back to the lady and announced 'he's over there somewhere'.

The lady thanked him and was about to walk in the direction he was pointing before he gave up his act and signed an autograph for her.

He has left behind hour-upon-hour of matches and promos but those few seconds when I was in on a wind-up with him is a unique moment I will never forget.
