Oh My God

I am looking forward to the WWE Backlash event tonight just to see how the McMahon's justify their promotion of God appearing in a featured match.

Yes, that is right, God is making his wrestling debut.

GOD.

The background to this story is based around Shawn Michaels who in the past became an obnoxious person to deal with backstage with his addictions to painkillers and then, after realising the error of his ways, he found God and became a born again christian.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago and the feud was brewing between Vince McMahon and HBK. McMahon was telling Shawn how he was jealous of how his life had become pure since 'finding God'.

Then there was a prayer Vince said before his match against Michaels at Wrestlemania 22 where he opened with 'Dear God, you don't like me and to be quite frank I don't like you' and then detailed how he was going to beat up God's favourite wrestler.

He lost.

The next night on Raw McMahon blamed God for his loss and announced a tag team match at Backlash between himself and son, Shane McMahon versus Shawn Michaels and God.

At first I thought it was McMahon being funny and in essence making the match a two on one affair but in recent weeks we have seen lighning bolts fall from the sky (pyrotechnics I know!) so they really are going with the idea that Michaels is tagging up with the creator.

There are many things wrong with this kind of angle. For a start I see wrestling as an escape. It's a fantasy and adding elements of religion to storylines is going too far. I was brought up in a catholic school system so have been fed religion all my life so if I choose to move away from that in my time to enjoy myself I shouldn't really have it thrown down my throat by an entertainment form such as professional wrestling.

Another thing that is irking me is for Shawn Michaels to even be involved in an angle like this. A few years ago he refused to become a heel (bad guy) because he said it would conflict with his ideologies. In recent weeks we have seen an edgier Heartbreak Kid which is hankering back to his time in the past when he was the bad guy.

The only saving grace that would come out of this is if the 'God' turned out to be Triple H and they can reform the d-Generation X faction that proved to be popular in the late 90's. HHH and HBK are going stale in their current roles so I believe it is a good time for a reunition.

Until then I will keep on praying.
