Schadenfreude

I learnt a new word yesterday. Schadenfreude.

It is a word which brings in the German words 'Schaden' for damage and 'Freude' for joy. 'So what does this all mean?' I hear you ask.

If you ever watched a Laurel and Hardy film and Oliver gets knocked over the head by a plank of wood and you laugh then that is Schadenfreude. Hardy gets the pain and you get the humour from it.

That is just one example of Schadenfreude. It can be cruel.

For me, I bathed in some Schadenfreude last night. Liverpool were beating Luton Town 1-0 so I thought I would put £16 on them to win the rest of the match only for myself to see Luton end up 3-1 ahead. The Gods of sport's betting were laughing from my misfortune at that point of the game but at the final whistle Liverpool marched in to the next round of the FA Cup at the expense of all those Luton Town players and fans who thought they were on their way to a giant kiling only to let in four goals after having a comfortable lead.

Luton Town losing and me profiting from it; Ahhhhh, Schadenfreude!
